At times, "Stella" feels akin to a made-for-TV movie, particularly due to the somewhat contrived emotional moments that are presented. This could have been seriously detrimental, but fortunately, the film distinguishes itself from standard approaches and develops into an engrossing examination of how the connections between several characters change over time, as each individual deals with their own challenges. It's disappointing that Ed Munn’s story isn't explored in greater detail; we learn about Stephen and Janice, so it would have been nice to see a similar level of insight given to Ed and Stella to create a bit more balance within the narrative.
