Starter for 10 proved to be an amusing and agreeable film, largely thanks to the presence of James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Alice Eve—performers whom I greatly admire. McAvoy is particularly good portraying Brian Jackson, a student attempting to find his place in college while striving for a spot on the "University Challenge" team. He manages to capture the character's blend of discomfort and desire remarkably well, making him easy to connect with. Cumberbatch delivers laughs as the excessively earnest team leader, and Alice Eve brings considerable appeal to her role as Brian’s object of affection. The actors elevate the movie considerably, despite the narrative feeling somewhat familiar. It follows a standard story about growing up, but it's presented in an enjoyable fashion filled with humor and genuine emotion. The music and overall atmosphere evoke a sense of nostalgia for the 1980s, and while not flawless, it’s simply one of those films that is easy to appreciate.
