It’s an enjoyable film worth revisiting, and I feel comfortable suggesting it, though it might be a good choice for a "Bad Movie Night." I need to state upfront that the movie isn't actually good; its notoriety comes from being a famously bad film that people still enjoy. Considering it was released in 1997, the computer-generated effects are pretty rough. The practical effects were decent, but there aren’t many scenes where you can really appreciate them. Again, it’s 1997, and the movie feels strangely dated in its vision of what the future would look like. For those unfamiliar with it, this film was clearly influenced by the popularity of Starcraft in the late nineties, and because there weren't many movies about hordes—at least, not zombie hordes. It’s obviously inspired by Starcraft’s Zerg and Warhammer 40K’s Tyranids; essentially, bugs all around. The world-building is impressive, and we only see a small portion of it. A "Star Trek"-like series could have easily been made set in that universe. The acting is adequate for the material presented; the background characters are disposable, the main actors fulfill their roles, and there's a clear hierarchy among them. I’m not sure how much better they could have cast this film, but I suspect if the character development had been stronger in the script, they might have attracted some bigger names. There’s a young Neil Patrick Harris, Amy Smart, and Dina Myers was excellent, but the other characters weren't particularly likable, and I can’t tell if it was poor writing or just that I didn't care for their appearances. Denise Richards was popular at the time, but her nose reminds me of the Carey Mulligan blooper where she accidentally bites off the mayor's nose, and even in "Wild Things," I thought Neve Campbell could have done a better job. The overall presentation is decent enough, with sufficient action sequences and well-placed humor to keep you engaged throughout the film. It’s entertaining; please don’t take it too seriously. If I can enjoy it, so can you.
