The film contains recurring hints suggesting the conflict isn’t as straightforward as those in positions of power would like people to think. A journalist raises the possibility that humans initiated hostilities, and that the Arachnids might be reacting defensively. One person on a television program dismisses the notion of intelligent Arachnids, demonstrating how effectively public opinion has been manipulated to demonize the opposing side. There’s a powerful sequence where we finally get a look at an arachnid's eye, and for just a second I was curious about what that creature might be experiencing. That fleeting moment of consideration is abruptly cut short by gunfire and the relentless violence of the war continuing. This, to me, reinforces the film’s anti-war sentiment: The soldiers can only remain compliant if they are denied opportunities for introspection or doubt regarding the established order. Consequently, when the audience sees the final propaganda segment declaring a resounding and over-the-top victory, they may have already forgotten that they recently witnessed a conscious being suffering in pursuit of this supposed triumph.
