Jeff Bridges delivers one of his stronger portrayals in this film. He plays an extraterrestrial being who comes to Earth and takes on the form of "Hayden." The complication is that Hayden has recently passed away, so his widow, "Jenny" (Karen Allen), understandably finds herself bewildered as he persuades her to drive him to Arizona for a meeting with others of his kind. The impact site from his arrival has drawn the notice of SETI—a government group tasked with searching for extraterrestrial life—and predictably, the more aggressive military forces led by "Fox" (Richard Jaeckel). What follows is an unusual road trip as the pair slowly develop a connection while being chased by those trying to capture them. A subtle rapport develops between Allen and Bridges; his performance is understated and mild, as if he were an infant in an adult’s form, disoriented in an unfamiliar and unfriendly place. There are some genuinely heartwarming scenes, along with moments of levity, and although the outcome isn't a surprise, the journey of this couple unfolds in a tenderly sentimental manner—though not overly sweet or dramatic. It does feel somewhat lengthy; it takes a while for things to pick up speed, but ultimately, it’s a well-shot, well-scored, and engaging exploration of character from John Carpenter. I would recommend seeing it.
