Several negative assessments of this film seem to have gotten caught up in political arguments, though I genuinely can’t grasp the connection between it and international affairs. The complaints appear to stem from a scenario involving the American military encountering people living as if it were Ancient Egypt and killing their deity—a point some critics are raising on IMDb. It's easy to overlook that this god had previously enslaved those very same people. I consider myself politically progressive, and I still don’t believe there’s any political angle here at all. My understanding is the movie was initially presented as "Indiana Jones meets Star Wars," and it certainly feels like a project designed to be precisely that combination. They obviously couldn't call it that, so they went with “Stargate,” and I intend to evaluate it based on its intended premise. Essentially, this film delivers Indiana Jones meets Star Wars. It was created to be a success, though it didn’t achieve the level of popularity it deserved. The basic idea alone makes me want to watch it again; it has the same core concept as “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” except that movie remembered aliens don't belong in Indiana Jones's world. I would have even enjoyed the television series more if the alien planets they explored didn’t all look remarkably like Canada. Ultimately, this is a purely entertaining action-adventure science fiction film that doesn’t attempt to convey any deeper meaning; it’s simply enjoyable. Let’s refrain from injecting politics into escapist entertainment.
