Ian McKellan sets the stage as we meet young Dunstan, portrayed by Ben Barnes, who makes an impulsive decision to climb over a wall and finds himself face-to-face with a girl held captive by magical restraints. They quickly assess the situation and take her away in a wagon. Nine months pass, and a baby arrives—Tristan. Years later, Charlie Cox takes on the role of Tristan, displaying traits inherited from his father, and upon learning about his lineage, he decides to follow suit and cross the wall himself. His mission this time is to retrieve a fragment of a fallen star for Victoria, played by Sienna Miller. During his quest, he unexpectedly meets Yvaine, brought to life by Claire Danes, unaware that she embodies the essence of the star itself—and that both are now being hunted by Lamia, portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer, who seeks the star’s power to regain her own. The film unfolds as a sequence of enjoyable adventures, featuring a memorable cast including Peter O'Toole as a king who seems perfectly happy to let his children battle for the throne; and Robert de Niro as the captain of a pirate airship known for his threatening behavior—though he harbors a secret of his own. The narrative is captivating, often humorous, and the visual effects, particularly near the end, are impressive, complemented by a palpable connection between Danes and Cox. It does feel lengthy, and perhaps those initial twenty minutes could have been trimmed; however, Pfeiffer makes for an effective villain, and there's enough action to maintain interest. I wasn’t keen on the Take That song used at the very end (and apparently neither was Miss Pfeiffer), but overall it is a skillfully made fantasy adventure that I found entertaining.
