(As I began writing this review, music from Darth Vader started playing in my head...) It does have a name, actually—the same theme as Darth Vader. That name is "The Imperial March," composed by John Williams, who also wrote the theme for “Jaws”—that famous score simply called "Main Title (Theme From Jaws)." Now, with that bit of information out of the way, let’s move on to the film I'm reviewing: Star Wars. I saw it at a drive-in theater in a small Illinois town during our weekly "Movie Date Night" with my mother and older brother. We watched George Lucas’s cult classic from our car in the parking lot. The movie looked like a silent film on the large outdoor screen, but thanks to an old speaker connected by a wire, we could hear both the dialogue and soundtrack clearly. We even had snacks—we walked back to the car from the concession stand. It was a beautiful summer evening that July. From the moment the film began, with my brother and I following along as our mother quickly read the opening crawl, I started feeling uneasy, thinking this movie, the first in a franchise that would soon become world-renowned, might be boring because science fiction wasn’t really my favorite genre at the time. I didn't think I was going to like Star Wars very much... But I soon became intrigued… and amazed. George Lucas has an incredible imagination. Besides his human characters—Han, Luke, Leia, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, among others—the droids: C-3P0, R2-D2, the R2-series, and IG-88, not to mention unusual characters like Jabba the Hutt, Yoda, and Chewbacca, are all products of Lucas’s imagination. I was completely impressed by each of these strange beings. Then there was Vader... And the evil Emperor ... And the Stormtroopers ... And the spacecraft ... And the galaxies (I've always loved the Universe in all its beauty) ... And the amazing planets ... The Lightsabers ... And so on. Star Wars is a beautifully filmed space opera; it’s truly an epic masterpiece. We really enjoyed this film. My brother became a huge fan from that night onward. He even received nearly every Star Wars action figure my mother could find for Christmas that year, including two spacecraft: The Millennium Falcon and Star Destroyer. The Death Star was also under our Christmas tree—with his name on it. It was wild, what the new Star Wars era brought about. Intense! But it was great... Even now. I don’t know anyone who hasn't seen Star Wars, but I imagine there are still a few people out there who haven’t. If you’re one of them, you should know that this classic space opera is highly recommended. The series is told in reverse order, so you'll want to watch Star Wars first, followed by its two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi... in that sequence. I think you’ll become a lifelong fan too. 😊
