vylmen on Star Trek Into Darkness

2/10 · Dec 7, 2024

It's hard to believe this film exists. Someone else suggested it would only appeal to die-hard Star Trek enthusiasts, but actually, it’s quite the opposite. While there are action scenes with some energy, they never reach a satisfying conclusion. We see Chekov supporting Kirk, who is holding Scotty, as their ship loses altitude and enters Earth's atmosphere. Then there’s a brief five-second discussion on a bridge, and suddenly they’re strolling down a hallway. Seriously? It tries to emulate the style of McG, but without understanding how to deliver those grand, over-the-top endings. Though, truthfully, most Star Trek fans wouldn't want McG involved either. This kind of storytelling weakens both what Star Trek stands for and Abrams’ own efforts at creating suspense. By not fully embracing clever solutions or complete ridiculousness, these scenes feel empty. What’s disappointing is that Star Trek has demonstrated over many years that well-considered narratives can be just as exciting—or even more so—than fast-paced action. Abrams' unwillingness to believe in the intelligence of his audience or the characters is a significant factor in why his version of the series creates such a split among fans. It’s ridiculous, especially considering the movie made money.
