Gimly on Star Trek Into Darkness

6/10 · Oct 4, 2018

_Star Trek: Into Darkness_, sometimes referred to as _STID_—a nickname that I find rather unfortunate—is, in my view, an advancement over the earlier film, even though I still found enjoyment in that one too. Both J.J. Abrams’s 2009 movie and this sequel seem to share a problem that I noticed right away. They both feel like extended episodes of television. And because I haven't watched much of the original _Star Trek_ series, my feeling isn’t based on familiarity with that format. It's just an impression I got pretty quickly while watching each film. In this respect, _Into Darkness_ is a little better than its predecessor. This new _Star Trek_ movie unfortunately has several plot problems. There's at least one that I consider to be quite bad. They aren’t enough to spoil the experience entirely, but they do make me question Abrams’s ability to oversee a series if he can’t even manage something like _Star Trek_. From the beginning, I had questions that could have been easily answered with just a few lines of dialogue. It was disappointing because it lessened my enjoyment of what was otherwise an entertaining film. Even though these problems became more noticeable as the movie went on, praise is certainly due to Abrams and his team for their approach to the timeline. They figured out how to successfully restart the franchise without disrespecting the original series—and they’ve also created opportunities for further changes down the line now that the idea has been presented. That was a very clever move. It's great to see Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin back in their roles. As expected, they are all excellent. But I wouldn’t be much of a Tumblr user if I didn’t give special recognition to Benedict Cumberbatch, who truly deserves it; he makes for an impressive villain. 65% —_Gimly_
