The effort to blend familiar characters with a newer setting feels underwhelming, featuring William Shatner as “Capt. Kirk” and James Doohan as “Mr. Scott” on the inaugural journey of the newest USS Enterprise. As expected, things quickly deteriorate when they come across a massive energy ribbon that hits the vessel, leading to chaos. The story then advances several years, with Patrick Stewart now commanding the ship and the TNG team facing off against Roddy McDowall, portraying a scientist obsessed with replicating that initial event so he can be reunited with his missing spouse. “Picard” finds himself alongside “Kirk” within an almost mirrored timeline as they work together to overcome their adversary. However, the film now incorporates elements like "holodecks," "prime directives," and references to Gilbert & Sullivan; the lighthearted and playful aspects have disappeared, and it begins to feel overly earnest. While McDowall consistently delivered convincing portrayals of eccentric characters, the movie lost my interest after just a quarter of an hour.
