It’s remarkable how much disagreement this movie generates within the series’ fanbase. It ranks as my least enjoyable installment, aside from maybe "The Final Frontier," because it tries to force a moral lesson that seems too ambitious for everyone involved – both in front of and behind the camera. The visual effects are impressive, certainly, but even with James Cromwell's unusual performance, I find myself considering it little more than an extended episode of "Next Generation," complete with its own brand of pretentious idealism. As often happens when films are directed by and feature their stars, impartiality can sometimes be sacrificed—and that’s what worries me about this one.
