My children and I watched Star Trek Beyond last Saturday; we’d received it in the mail the day before. We generally enjoyed the film considerably. There was a good amount of action, impressive special effects, and a decent story. But one thing really bothered me. They destroyed the Enterprise…again. Seriously, why do they keep blowing up the Enterprise in every movie? It's repetitive and frustrating. I’ve seen it before. Aside from that, it made for a solid addition to the new timeline film series. I don’t know what people who gave it one star ratings and labeled it the worst movie ever were anticipating. Anyone familiar with the previous two movies should expect an action-packed blockbuster filled with CGI, and that's precisely what we received. In my opinion, that’s a positive thing. I was growing tired of some earlier films in the original timeline where they almost never fired a weapon and attempted to talk or reason their way out of every situation. The plot wasn’t bad, although I do agree it didn’t really move the story forward significantly. It felt like an episode from a TV show stretched into a full-length movie. However, it worked well as an action film; I would have appreciated more information about how Edison became Krall and, even if that could be attributed to some mutation caused by alien technology, how he managed to revert himself back to Edison. The CGI depicting the alien swarm flowing across the screen and the massive Yorktown station was quite remarkable. It also pleased me that the Enterprise and the Franklin ships could withstand a fair amount of damage before starting to malfunction. In many previous movies and TV shows, it only took one hit for a console to explode and the warp core to fail. Overall, my kids and I really liked this entry in the series.
