I wasn’t familiar with Doraemon before seeing this movie; I didn't grow up watching the series like many people did. It was never shown on Cartoon Network, where I watched most of my shows as a kid. Though I occasionally caught glimpses while my niece was watching it, the English dub didn’t really grab me. This film marked my first real experience with what so many children adore—Doraemon. I genuinely liked it, almost loved it, and now regret not having discovered it sooner because it felt like something I would have enjoyed during my childhood. The emergence of 3D anime is a relatively new development; digital 3D offers an advantage over traditional 2D animation while simplifying production. This doesn’t mean that conventional anime will disappear, but the recent decision by Studio Ghibli to stop producing films raises questions. The shift toward 3D animation in Hollywood has rapidly diminished 2D animations over the last ten years. I recall seeing ‘The Princess and the Frog’ as one of the last such films. While I'm happy about technological progress, it’s also sad to see traditional cartoons lose their appeal. Fortunately, familiar flat characters are being reimagined in three dimensions; a great example is the recent 'Asterix and Obelix' movie. ‘Popeye’ and other films are following suit, which is something positive. I was surprised to learn that Doraemon is science fiction—I initially thought he was just a talking toy, similar to the character in 'Ted'. I apologize to fans for my ignorance, but I am quickly learning. The main criticism I've heard from Doraemon enthusiasts is that the story isn’t original; they’ve apparently seen it in shorter anime versions. This film stands alone, not connected to previous movies or TV series, offering a fresh start that helps newcomers understand the world of Doraemon. It draws on six separate Doraemon manga short stories, and you can sometimes sense where those segments end and begin, but overall, they are well-combined. Unlike television shows, this Japanese Academy Award–winning animated film appeals to audiences of all ages, including adults. The movie is very funny, unexpectedly romantic, and emotionally mature—even for children, there's something valuable to be learned from the story. I particularly enjoyed many individual scenes because they were not only beautiful and humorous but also cleverly constructed. The ending twist was especially surprising and charmingly smart. I’ve become a Doraemon fan now, and I am hoping for a sequel. The character Nobita is reminiscent of the protagonist in 'CJ7,' obsessed with his new friend who helps him. Because he struggles with everything, he often starts well but ends up failing, so he relies on gadgets from his robot cat. He's also lazy and frequently bullied by his classmates Gian and Suneo. However, he has a crush on Shizuka, and Hidetoshi stands in the way of their relationship. Now Nobita faces competition to win her heart—a challenge that will also help him improve his future. These efforts are nicely portrayed in the film. I liked all the 3D-converted characters; Shizuka was especially cute. Doraemon looked a bit larger and resembled a giant blue ball, but it was endearing and funny. The same sense of energy from the anime remained, such as when someone jumps, they linger in midair during moments of joy or shock, and tears drip sideways. This is a difference between 2D and 3D animation, but it worked well here. After all, that’s what animations are for—to make the impossible possible. Animals can talk and become heroes, especially to children. I enjoyed it just as much as any kid would. This movie represents a turning point in Doraemon's history, offering everyone an opportunity to meet these lovable characters from the very beginning. I know that Doraemon fans love it, and I hope others will too. 7.5/10
