A group of performers are working late into the night during a storm, trying to create a successful show, when a violent former performer escapes from a mental institution and traps them inside the theater. David Brandon portrays the anxious director, while Robert Gligorov takes on one of the acting roles. "StageFright” (1987), also known as “Aquarius” and originally titled “Deliria,” is an Italian slasher film. I struggled to identify its country of origin while watching it, but don’t let the fact that it's Italian deter you; it translates well for English speakers and could have just as easily been filmed in America, Canada or the UK. The soundtrack features a somber, synth-heavy style similar to Pink Floyd, with some more lively 80s music incorporated later on. Barbara Cupisti (as Alicia), Jo Ann Smith (as Sybil), Loredana Parrella (as Corinne) and Mary Sellers (as Laurel) are particularly noteworthy among the female cast. Ultimately, it’s a solid slasher film with a distinctive setting; if that's what you enjoy, the deaths and gore are executed well, though I couldn’t really bring myself to care about them. However, there isn’t enough focus on character development, and given the available resources, the director could have improved how he filmed the actresses (and I’m not referring to nudity or anything like that), but it's acceptable overall. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 30 minutes and was filmed in Rome, Italy. GRADE: B-
