Jacki Weaver portrays Maybeline, a traditional Texan woman who learns that her adult son, who was openly gay, has passed away from an overdose in San Francisco. Ignoring her husband Jeb’s objections, she travels to the funeral and gradually uncovers details about her son's life—his longtime boyfriend Nathan, portrayed by Adrian Grenier, his close friend Sienna, played by Lucy Liu, and their shared drag club. Most of those around her are initially wary or openly hostile, except for Sienna, who recognizes a chance for free childcare, especially since it becomes clear that her son died without a will, meaning everything he owned now belongs to Maybeline. While her husband is eager to simply sell the assets, she decides to attempt to keep the club running and connect with the people her son cherished. The movie has a warmhearted quality and a gentle narrative, including some amusing drag-related jokes and sharp remarks. Although the musical numbers are somewhat cheesy, it doesn't detract from the overall experience. At its core, this is a story about remorse and finding the courage to take action; Maybeline’s desire to succeed with the club and its performers stems partly from feelings of guilt but also from her own suppressed desires that had been stifled by a dull marriage—a stark contrast to the vibrant personality her son expressed. It isn't a masterpiece, occasionally feeling like an amateur production, but Liu and Weaver create compelling characters. I found it quite enjoyable.
