I recall seeing this film some time ago, and revisiting it recently, I was taken aback to realize Melissa McCarthy is in it. It’s possible I wasn't as aware of her comedic abilities back then, or I would have remembered. It consistently ranks among my preferred understated films; ultimately, it provides a heartwarming experience — the kind where many people express appreciation for someone. This evokes comparisons to moments like Alan King’s portrayal in *Memories of Me* (at his memorial service!) and even the considerably less appealing Al Pacino character in *Scent of a Woman*. I suspect the Vin character himself would fall flat with numerous other performers. I've been consistently impressed by Bill Murray’s evolution as an actor since his time on *Saturday Night Live*. He seems to incorporate aspects of his personality into most roles, and he excels at subtle movements, vocal delivery, pauses for emphasis, and other acting techniques. He brings to mind Mark Ryland, who also makes performing appear effortless. I am quite certain Murray completely made up the final scene during the end credits, where he waters a plant and tends to everything in his backyard. I appreciate that the movie avoids superficial, easy jokes at people’s expense, even though it easily could have. Even the character of the unfaithful, divorcing father is presented with a more favorable perspective by the film's conclusion. The four principal actors are all excellent, and the two child performers playing Oliver and the bully also deliver strong performances. As an aside, I noticed something unusual on one review website known for its vegetable-themed name; this is the only movie I’ve checked that has identical ratings from critics and audiences (78). That seems appropriate to me as well. And speaking of credits, I really need to work on not reacting negatively when The Weinsteins appear in the opening sequence.
