It’s really enjoyable, I’d happily watch it again, and I suggest others check it out too. I tend to automatically like any film that manages to make me tear up. I’ve long hoped to see Bill Murray portray a curmudgeonly older man, and this one strikes a balance somewhere between "About a Boy" and "Up!", though leaning closer to the former. There's something appealing, even when it isn't overtly so, about a young person learning things from someone else. It’s a kind of dynamic that I think is rare, and which I find very rewarding. It was also refreshing to encounter a coming-of-age narrative that doesn't center on romantic relationships; it demonstrates that personal growth can happen without focusing on those kinds of connections—almost like an opposite of the Bechdel test. This film is absolutely worth seeing, and it does a commendable job of illustrating its own point about having a tough exterior while possessing inner goodness.
