Darren Bausman's newest film, shot in 2018 and taking place in the nineteen fifties, centers around a young woman named Mary who arrives at a convent. The institution is overseen by an unsettling figure and her staff, employing manipulative tactics. There were two scenes that stood out. One involved a pregnant girl seemingly vomiting because of her pregnancy; it turned out the Mother Superior, portrayed by Caroline Hennessy, was a cruel person running a clandestine operation to sell babies for profit and support those residing within the church. Another striking scene occurred when one of the girls voiced concerns about her baby being alive, prompting the Mother Superior to remove her tongue. Mary then has to figure out how to rescue her child and the other women from the Mother’s reach. I felt Sabrina Kern's portrayal of defiance was very good, though I occasionally wondered if she was acting overly dramatic on purpose. Trin Miller as Paula, who serves as the Mother Superior's right hand, was irritating with her habit of eavesdropping and reporting everything, but it did serve a purpose for the Mother Superior; I was also surprised to learn that she had previously appeared in those excellent gamer films from Dead Gentleman Productions. I initially expected this to be an exorcism movie, and I’m relieved it wasn't because I believe it offers a unique perspective on this type of wickedness. Considering the film's budget, it was quite well done. I would suggest checking it out.
