Occasionally, I crave the kind of powerful theatrical performance one might see with Zoe Caldwell in Medea (1982 - Cort Theater in New York City). At other times, I prefer to lose myself in the comedic talent of an actor I admire, such as Melissa McCarthy. Spy fulfills a need for adventure, action, and correcting injustices in our world—it’s definitely worth seeing! Susan Cooper is relatable; she's smart and wants to do what's proper. She can be generous and kind, but doesn’t want anyone pushing her around. Susan has a playful sense of humor. Ultimately, she manages to surprise viewers with her resourcefulness and impressive (and intimidating) skills. Susan feels like one of us—a combination of who we are and who we aspire to be. Rose Byrne truly impressed me with how effectively she portrayed the sociopathic (but also comical) Rayna. The chemistry between Byrne and McCarthy was spot-on, and McCarthy did a fantastic job of making Susan feel sympathetic, like an endearing Arctic fox. Jude Law is charming and wonderful as Bradley Fine, the seemingly deceptive professional—it turns out he’s alright after all. I never would have guessed Jason Statham could be so funny! I generally don't care for his movies or characters; Rick Ford is a clear exception. His comedic timing and authenticity were remarkable. I’ve watched this film twice now, and each time it has entertained me immensely. I recommend you give it a try too.
