“The Sputnik” establishes a palpable feeling of mounting biological unease. It’s unavoidable that comparisons will be drawn to Ridley Scott's "Alien" from 1979, and I should state upfront that the similarities are mostly surface-level; this is a distinct film in its own right. Where “Alien” accelerates as the danger escalates, "The Sputnik" unfolds deliberately as a slow-paced science fiction story. While it shares elements of an alien monster movie, at its core it’s just as concerned with psychological aspects as it is with the literal events unfolding. Does that approach succeed? It's complicated. There are instances of real suspense and fear, alongside a disturbing look at what people are capable of inflicting on one another. The question of who constitutes the true monster lingers throughout. The film does include action sequences, but they’re short-lived and end quickly. What remains is intriguing, though it doesn't deliver enough impact in either the action or psychological horror departments to feel substantial—more like an appetizer when a full meal is expected. I give "The Sputnik" a 6/10.
