Among the many rock star biopics that have come out lately, this one feels like the least impressive. It's not that Jeremy Allen White isn’t believable; he generally is. The problem lies in the story they chose to tell, which focuses on his quest for some kind of personal ideal—musically and emotionally—and it simply doesn’t hold much interest. I also didn’t find the portrayal of his relationship with Faye (Odessa Young), where commitment seems to be an issue, particularly deep. Jon Landau (Jeremy Strong) offers a bit of creative and emotional support, which at least hints at the demands placed on him to constantly produce hits for both the record label and fans who want something new all the time. But I wonder if it would have been better to offer a more complete view of his career? Possibly, unless they’re planning another film because this one offers just a taste but ultimately leaves you wanting more, especially when it comes to the music that initially draws you in. The visuals are appealing—the costumes, cars, and cassette recorders all look good—but I thought it was too surface-level of an exploration of someone who possessed both brilliance and imperfections. It’s okay to see, but ultimately a letdown.
