It's possible that someone in advertising might describe this film as a combination of “Love Story” and “Philadelphia.” However, classifying it simply as another entry in the genre of tragic romances with gay characters feels limiting. There are only so many ways to portray a love story between two men, and similarly for narratives centered around a character facing death. Consequently, some predictable plot elements are almost unavoidable. Yet, even those familiar aspects—like one man concealing his relationship from his family—are presented in a way that feels new and insightful regarding the outcome. The recollections of childhood, depicted through the style of a 1970s sitcom, struck me as particularly creative and distinctive. There’s definitely a spark between the two main characters, which is essential for the film to succeed, and the supporting cast of friends and family members performs adequately. “Spoiler Alert” isn't going to become one of my go-to movies or make it onto any “favorites” lists, but I did enjoy watching it and appreciated the care and consideration given to the topic and the original material throughout its creation.
