This horror movie packs a punch, compensating for its lack of an entirely fresh plot with other strengths. Seth (Paulo Costanzo) and Polly (Jill Wagner), a young couple, discover their romantic camping getaway is disrupted by their incompetence in the wilderness. However, this quickly becomes insignificant when they are car-jacked by escaped convict Dennis Farell (Shea Whigham) and his girlfriend Lacey Belisle (Rachel Kerbs), who struggles with drug addiction. After accidentally running over what seems to be an animal, a frightening experience begins for the group, forcing them into a gas station where they must fight for survival. The subsequent hour delivers suspense, fear, disturbing imagery, and well-developed characters. It's essentially a siege scenario, with the threat being some sort of porcupine–vegetable–human hybrid, and it’s consistently inventive and intense. Director Toby Wilkins maintains a brisk pace throughout, ensuring that every scene and interaction advances the story. The film avoids the usual horror trope of characters behaving foolishly, which contributes to its overall effectiveness. The special effects are restrained, and the only real drawback is the frequent use of shaky camera work. Perhaps this was intended to conceal the effects, but it becomes irritating, particularly in the final section. The small cast delivers strong performances, with Whigham notably portraying a despicable antagonist, while Nelson Cragg’s cinematography reduces the color palette to a raw, independent feel that enhances the film. It's an enjoyable and unexpected find, and I would suggest it to horror enthusiasts seeking a fast-paced and brutal siege movie that consistently delivers. 7.5/10
