The film centers on Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley), genetic engineers working for Barlow, portrayed by David Hewlett. Their task is to identify a crucial gene with the potential to revolutionize medicine. The process involves combining human and animal DNA, yielding mixed results until the emergence of Dren (Delphine Chanéac). This creature exhibits increasingly human characteristics alongside physical traits like a tail stinger and wings. As the narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that Elsa has a significant personal stake in protecting their creation, not only from their employer but also from its escalating violent urges and desires. While I found the initial concept intriguing, the way it’s presented falls short. Brody's performance felt unconvincing throughout, and there was a noticeable lack of connection between him and Polley. What could have been a complex and stimulating storyline instead veers into implausibility, and I just wanted it to finish so we could get to some kind of resolution—both regarding the characters’ fates and the scientific implications. The film touches on the risks associated with unchecked scientific exploration, but does so without offering anything particularly fresh or engaging; I've found more enjoyment in similar films produced by Hammer Studios.
