It's difficult to assess Splice, because it presents some genuinely impressive concepts. It’s possible to view it as a fresh take on the familiar story of scientists confronting repercussions from their experiments, but equally reasonable to see it as simply imitating Cronenberg. The film is full of psychological tension, particularly in its portrayal of unconventional child-rearing, which creates a disturbing and captivating atmosphere. Even though the male gaze aspects are uncomfortable, they do provoke an unsettling curiosity. However, the movie loses control around the final third; the increasingly absurd dangers associated with scientific manipulation devolve into silly and even unpleasant scenes—the ending feels like a clumsy effort to set up a sequel. The actors deliver strong performances. Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley are convincing as the scientists pushing boundaries, and Delphine Chaneac is remarkable in her portrayal of the spliced creature, capturing all the complex emotions needed for such a complicated character. Director Vincenzo Natali has previously demonstrated talent with films like Cube and Cypher, but this feels uneven. It’s a movie brimming with strong ideas that are undermined by an over-the-top plot designed to generate shock value, and the attempts at humor feel misplaced and detrimental to the overall drama. The rating is 6/10.
