What’s behind the killings at a Catholic school situated along the Hudson River, just outside New York City? A woman accepts a teaching position at a Catholic college near New York City and quickly learns that her predecessor was murdered, and the person responsible was never found. As more disturbing deaths occur, she believes she has identified the killer. More than an hour of footage for “Splatter University” was filmed in 1981, but additional scenes featuring students were shot in 1982 to extend the film’s length by thirteen minutes. It wasn't released until 1984. I mention this because it feels like a product of 1981 or '82 rather than the mid-eighties. Made on a budget of just $26,000, you need to cut some slack regarding the low production quality to get any enjoyment out of it. Fortunately, similar to "The Majorettes" (1986), it has enough good moments to make it worthwhile for those who like this type of movie, despite its flaws: questionable performances and editing. Forbes Riley is effective as the lead character and seems believable in her role; Denise Texeira (as Denise) and Kathy LaCommare (as Cathy) also stand out among the female cast. There’s some amusing humor sprinkled throughout, and the early 80's settings, decorations, and fashions are noteworthy. The conclusion is unexpected, even startling—not the reveal of who committed the murders, but something else entirely. The movie has a running time of one hour and eighteen minutes and was filmed in various locations around New York City, including Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, Sayville on Long Island, and Peekskill (the drive-in theater).
