A genuinely enjoyable film that I’d happily watch again and suggest to others. Even with twenty-five years having passed, the movie still works well, although an updated version might be needed in the near future. Take a trip back in time to see some familiar faces early in their careers: Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, John Candy, and Eugene Levy. That group essentially drives the story forward as they experience a delightful and entertaining journey centered around a mystery involving a new person in Allen’s life. To be honest, you could probably remove the mermaid element and have her simply be an eccentric woman from another country—though that sounds like something someone has already made. The fact that it's about a mermaid certainly allows for some creative liberties and makes the movie more distinctive. It introduces a theme about the significance of communication into the story, which serves as a central point to propel the plot and becomes a key element in the final act. Since there isn’t really a clear villain, this kind of conflict is typical of how romantic comedies reach their conclusion. It's an entertaining film, well-crafted for its era, and I suspect most viewers, particularly those who like mermaid movies, will find it pleasing.
