It’s hard to know where to begin with this film. Drawing a loose inspiration from Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," Will Ferrell portrays the Ghost of Christmas Present, now employed by Patrick Page’s “Jacob Marley” in an effort to redeem lost souls. Ryan Reynolds plays “Clint,” a highly successful influencer known for his cutthroat approach to representing clients. Present believes that if he can reform Clint, it will have a significant impact on the future—even though he seems to have already saved Dolly Parton. The plot becomes more engaging when Clint, instead of being frightened by Ferrell’s character, starts questioning his motives and challenging him. Sadly, despite Octavia Spencer's presence, the movie loses momentum fairly rapidly, relying on predictable physical comedy and some lackluster songs composed by Pasek and Paul. While the lyrics occasionally have merit, they are mostly overshadowed by Reynolds’ and Ferrell’s less-than-stellar singing abilities. The film seems unsure of how to conclude, attempting several endings before I began to feel restless. It's unusual to witness people leaving a cinema during a screening, but there were quite a few walkouts this time. For me, nothing compares to the Albert Finney/Leslie Bricusse version of "Scrooge" from 1970. Although this adaptation might be better suited for a stage production—a considerable portion feels very theatrical, particularly the dance sequences—I’ll simply return to that classic.
