The new home "Chihiro" and her family were moving to initially seemed appealing, but she wasn’t thrilled about it, and at ten years old, she felt a great deal of responsibility. While driving to meet the movers, her father mistakenly takes a detour, leading him and her mother down a tunnel. What would you do? Naturally, you'd go in! Fortunately, the walk isn't long before they arrive at a small village filled with shops seemingly prepared for a feast. Her parents begin eating immediately, but she just wants to leave. Feeling overlooked, she wanders around while they eat and that’s when she meets "Haku," who advises her it might be best if she left. The problem is, her parents have transformed into pigs, and she'll need the help of her new friend to save them from what seems like an impending trip to a slaughterhouse. Obtaining a job is her first step, which requires signing a contract with the witch "Yubaba," and so the story begins with a series of wonderfully imaginative adventures, including encounters with coal spirits; revealing that her friend has a hidden identity; dealing with a giant baby boss; and discovering that the entire place functions as a bathhouse for the mysterious "No Face," whose motives are unclear to anyone, though it’s known he has an insatiable appetite and can create gold. The animation is remarkable, and combined with the mysticism of ancient Japanese folklore, it creates a distinctive and captivating story. I especially appreciate the graceful dragons of Oriental mythology compared to the heavier, more European depictions. The theme of identity runs throughout the story, as not only "Chihiro" but almost everyone else confronts their imperfections and strengths, needing courage, faith, and understanding if they are to succeed and if she and her family are ever going to reach that new house on the hill. The two hours pass quickly, and I really enjoyed it.
