GenerationofSwine on Spider-Man: Homecoming

I’m not going to dwell on the mistake in continuity within the Marvel Cinematic Universe...because honestly, it's not something anyone is particularly concerned about, and I certainly wasn't. But let’s talk about how to approach this. It’s a relief that Garfield is no longer involved, along with his version of Spider-Man who seemed intent on tormenting others. For those familiar with the Marvel comics, it was genuinely unpleasant watching him bully and mock his victims. Now we have a Spidey who is, simply put, agreeable. Holland manages to be humorous and witty without coming across as someone like Flash Thompson. This brings us back to what the original stories were like. Basically, Holland restores the “friendly” aspect to "your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man." I believe Marvel was fully conscious of this, considering how much effort they put into making sure everyone knew Holland would be a hero that audiences could connect with. And Keaton delivers an excellent Vulture, from his beginnings to his end; he seemed determined to truly embody the character. My main issues were with the supporting characters. I can tolerate Aunt May, though begrudgingly, because she’s a talented actress... But Tony Revolori doesn't appear… physically imposing enough to play Flash. He seems more like the kind of bully that defines the Millennial generation—someone who relies on words and little else, and even those words feel empty. There’s an old saying, "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never harm me." I guess Millennials haven't heard it. Flash is supposed to be a large, intimidating jock who peaks in high school and, ten years later, delivers pizzas when you return home to visit your family...this Flash seems destined for something better. And the MJ scene at the end…it strayed too far from her established appearance and personality for my liking. Despite that, overall the movie feels like a welcome change from Garfield’s portrayal, and Holland even managed to capture a bit of a James Bond vibe while still playing a kid who's in over his head. Like all Marvel movies, though, the best part is the humor.
