I’m not entirely shocked, considering the Spider-Man we encountered in the most recent Captain America film, but I did have expectations that weren’t met. If the filmmakers set out to create a Spider-Man movie aimed at very young children—not teenagers or young adults—then it probably succeeds on those terms. It functions well as an action and adventure film for kids. However, since I'm not part of that target audience, I found it quite disappointing. The film feels childish, there’s no other way to put it. My recollection of Spider-Man is of a serious young man with a clever sense of humor, rather than the awkward and immature portrayal in this movie. His closest friend might be skilled with computers, but otherwise he comes across as incredibly naive and just plain irritating. The adult figure assigned to look after him seems incompetent, predictably ending calls because dealing with children is too much trouble. The special effects are visually impressive for what they are, but it’s also the usual nonsensical Hollywood stuff—like boats remaining afloat even when they're broken in half, and so on. The talking Spider-Man suit appears to be controlled by someone who shares responsibility for the immature screenplay. The main villain lacks charisma and is essentially just a common thief. His associates are equally unremarkable. The social justice messaging sprinkled throughout the movie, particularly during the scenes at the Washington Monument, felt intrusive and unwelcome. I feel this film completely missed its intended goal. I struggle to understand why Hollywood seems unable to produce a decent Spider-Man movie. I enjoy Spider-Man—the comic book character—so it’s disheartening to see so many subpar adaptations. It avoids receiving a lower rating only because, as entertainment for children, it's not entirely unpleasant (aside from the social justice elements). Still, it wasn’t what I wanted to see.
