Manuel São Bento on Spider-Man: Far From Home

6/10 · Jul 8, 2019

It’s interesting to revisit SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME after some time, especially prompted by the Once Upon a Franchise podcast—you can hear the full discussion at the link provided. My rating remains a B-. I still find enjoyment in this film, but a second viewing reveals certain weaknesses. Jake Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of Mysterio and those two large-scale illusion sequences are highlights; the visual effects are among the best Spider-Man action I've seen. The commentary on misinformation also continues to resonate as unsettlingly pertinent. However, watching it again highlighted how much the movie relies on its pace and appeal to distract from a villain’s plot that doesn't hold up under close examination. The narrative jumps between locations without any real sense of how travel is managed, and the constant references to Tony Stark and Iron Man are something I now find myself relating to, which is surprising given my usual dismissal of those who call Spider-Man "Iron Boy Jr." Considering the releases of NO WAY HOME and BRAND NEW DAY, both of which demonstrated what this series could achieve at its peak, FAR FROM HOME inevitably feels like a transitional film—a busy middle chapter that’s entertaining, well-acted, and occasionally impressive, but where the cracks in the production are more noticeable than before.
