It’s been quite some time since I bothered to watch a Marvel film; I'm certain many others feel similarly. The last one I experienced was Spider-Man. It seems like Tom Holland is now essentially propping up what remains of a once-remarkable series that appears to be falling apart, seemingly in an effort to appeal to a nonexistent audience. That’s the consequence of abandoning your established fans while trying to cater to current trends—you end up producing movies nobody truly wants to see by dismantling franchises people genuinely enjoyed. And now Tom Holland is left with the responsibility of holding it all together. As for what the movie itself was like, it desperately needed a more careful edit. It’s one of those instances where a director's cut should have resulted in a shorter film, not a longer one. The rhythm felt off; there were appearances that simply weren't necessary. That subplot about Spider-Man gaining new abilities didn't need to be included. The police captain’s role was also superfluous. If they had trimmed some of the excess, the movie would have been considerably improved. It would have moved more smoothly, the wait for the plot to unfold wouldn’t have felt so long, and the entire experience would have been better overall. Instead, it felt overstuffed. They attempted to cram too much into it, which is likely why audiences are reacting with a lukewarm response. However, even considering everything, it's still an improvement over what we’ve seen from the MCU since End Game. But then again, this is Spider-Man, and Sony has influence over it; I have a feeling they were involved in the decision to exclude female characters, which made it feel uninspired and undermined the only real hero the MCU currently possesses.
