It's difficult to improve upon Roger Ebert’s assessment from 2004: he described it as "a real movie, full-blooded and smart, with qualities even for those who have no idea who Stan Lee is. It's a superhero movie for people who don't go to superhero movies, and for those who do, it's the one they've been yearning for." A particularly moving scene featuring Aunt May also stands out; I’m not sure any film has so effectively portrayed a hero in such a touching and meaningful way. While Doctor Octopus’s actions lack clear reasoning and purpose, and Mary Jane Watson seems overly reliant on the men around her, along with a somewhat forced dynamic between Peter and Harry, these shortcomings don't detract from what is fundamentally a well-made film and a deserving follow-up to its predecessor.
