Kristen Stewart’s commitment is undeniable; she throws herself entirely into playing this woman struggling with the burdens of celebrity and family life. It's impossible to know how much truth there is to the portrayal of the actual Princess’s emotions and experiences, so while I recognized the effort put in, I felt that the film was overly harsh in its treatment of other people—those who are deceased or unable to defend themselves against this rather unbalanced account. The situation itself, as everyone involved has since acknowledged, was far more intricate than what's shown here in such a straightforward manner. It’s also jarring that the initial scenes claim to be set at Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk, but bear no resemblance to that recognizable landmark. From there, the narrative ventures into speculation about actual events, which I found simply irritating and unbelievable—even bordering on hysterical. The idea of her wandering through the countryside (with or without children) with no security seems improbable, and those peculiar references to “currency,” hinting at the downsides of a privileged life, felt overly manufactured. While praise is due for depicting an emotionally vulnerable woman, it has little connection to what really happened. As someone who lived in the UK during this person’s ascent and decline, much of this seemed like a poorly executed attempt to profit from a sad story, with not enough consideration given to those who actually had to live through it—or to accuracy.
