This film contains what I consider to be Keanu Reeves’ finest and most appealing portrayal. He plays "Jack," a Los Angeles police officer who becomes involved in a bus hostage crisis. It's not just any situation; the bus is positioned over a bomb designed to go off if its speed drops below 50 miles per hour. His task is to locate the bus and devise a method for preventing an explosion and evacuating everyone, given the congested streets of Los Angeles filled with pedestrians. Fortunately, Sandra Bullock ("Annie") is among those on board, which might give him some hope. We learn right away that Dennis Hopper, as an explosives expert, is behind everything – he’s clearly motivated by revenge – so the rest of the LAPD (along with his partner Jeff Daniels) must try to find him. Mark Mancina's music and some truly intense camera work maintain a fast pace throughout this suspenseful story, featuring numerous (though somewhat unrealistic) feats of engineering. The chemistry between Bullock and Reeves works well; she delivers an amusing performance, and it turns out the bus carries a collection of unusual passengers. She ultimately ends up doing all the driving, despite not having a license. Nearly three decades later, the film has hardly aged at all – in fact, there’s a sense of realism to the production that helps keep it captivating until the very end, which maintains a strong forward drive.
