Spectre doesn't quite live up to the promise of its captivating story and compelling villain, though Sam Mendes delivers a perfectly acceptable James Bond film. The script presents some problems, mainly due to a remarkably unengaging side plot that slows down the movie’s length considerably. It was also frustrating how little time Christoph Waltz got on screen, even though he gave an outstanding performance. Thankfully, the impressive action sequences help improve the overall experience, and the film is visually stunning thanks to Hoyte van Hoytema's cinematography, with strong performances from everyone involved. The connection between Daniel Craig’s character and Léa Seydoux’s feels genuinely moving, which makes Bond’s assignment seem more like a personal story. A truly great movie within the series seems lost beneath the flawed writing, but there is still plenty to enjoy on the surface. Rating: B
