It’s a familiar feeling, having made promises to visit new acquaintances met while traveling—a gesture similar to enjoying ouzo or metaxa; perfect when you're there, not so much afterward. The Dalton family is experiencing some hardship. Ben (Scoot McNairy) has recently moved from the United States to London only to discover his job no longer exists, Louise (Mackenzie Davis), his wife, is attempting to maintain a cheerful outlook, and their daughter Aggie (Alix West Lefler), an eleven-year-old girl, seems inseparable from her stuffed rabbit. They accept an invitation to spend a week with friends they met on vacation, traveling to the secluded home of Paddy (James McAvoy) and his family: Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) and their son Ant (Dan Hough), who doesn't speak. The initial days are pleasant enough—though the sleeping arrangements aren’t ideal—but it gradually becomes apparent that something isn't quite right in this seemingly perfect environment. When young Ant manages to communicate a disturbing secret to Aggie, apprehension begins among the visitors, leading them to decide an escape during the night is necessary. Naturally, things don’t go as planned, and resourcefulness and quick-thinking become essential for the family as circumstances escalate into danger. The film does pick up some energy in its final twenty minutes, though those moments feel a bit contrived, but otherwise it largely serves as a platform to highlight McAvoy's performance. He delivers an adequate portrayal, eventually, but there’s too much buildup leading to that climax. The early scenes, both on vacation and at the rural home, progress the plot so slowly and aimlessly that they fail to maintain enough interest throughout its nearly two-hour length. I also questioned how likely it was these people would have ever become friends in the first place—as improbable as the setting itself. It's perfectly acceptable viewing, but ultimately not very remarkable.
