Johan Renck's science fiction fantasy “Spaceman,” based on Jaroslav Kalfař’s 2017 novel, takes audiences on an exploration of one man’s isolation and how it becomes a disturbing connection with a large space spider. It requires considerable bravery to bring such an unconventional story to the screen, but Renck largely succeeds, largely due to a compelling performance from Adam Sandler. Jakub (Sandler), referred to as “the loneliest man in the world,” is halfway through a solitary mission to examine something unusual at the edge of our solar system. He comes to terms with the likelihood that his wife (Carey Mulligan) and the marriage he left behind won't still exist when he returns, which intensifies his desire to fix things. While on board, Jakub finds a giant alien spider, whom he names Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano), concealed within the ship. An unexpected bond and deep emotional connection develops between them. The film centers around two isolated individuals who find solace in each other’s company. They engage in significant conversations about life's purpose, love, death, and the pain of regret and grief that can overwhelm a person. Jakub’s aspirations have ruined his life and relationship, and he seems to be losing touch with reality (the possibility remains open for viewers to determine whether Hanuš is imagined or truly exists). The spider has the ability to access Jakub's memories and read his thoughts, revealing decades of suppressed pain and emotional distress. It's a story about what it means to be human, but also one about friendship and shared understanding. The visual effects team did an excellent job creating Hanuš; the spider appears realistic both in its physical appearance (with glossy eyes and a hairy body) and emotionally (thanks to Dano’s heartfelt voice work). The character feels authentic with empathy and companionship, and the relationship that forms between Hanuš and Jakub, whom he affectionately calls “skinny human,” is believable. Sandler demonstrates his ability as a dramatic actor (something easily overlooked), and delivers an outstanding performance portraying a person burdened by loneliness. “Spaceman” is contemplative and touching, but it won’t appeal to all viewers. It's certainly an odd film, however, it offers plenty of thoughtful consideration about the challenge of facing isolation, presented in a highly original manner.
