Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs," which came out in 1987, is a comedic imitation of the Star Wars movies and incorporates jokes referencing Star Trek, “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Alien,” and “Planet of the Apes.” While not everyone will enjoy it, the movie succeeds as a deliberately absurd spoof. It’s reliably funny, with numerous moments that elicit genuine laughter and some lines that stick in your head. The performers are a strong point, notably John Candy playing Barf, Daphne Zuniga portraying Princess Vespa, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, Brooks himself as Yogurt, and Joan Rivers lending her voice to Dot Matrix. The supporting actors also do well—Bill Pullman is Lone Starr, George Wyner plays Colonel Sandurz, among others. The movie’s length is 1 hour, 36 minutes. GRADE: B
