This feels like an unnecessary animated film. I believe the way it was made wasn’t right. The original “Space Jam” worked because it had something new, a unique combination of animation and a real basketball player who could also be part of the action. This one is disappointing and just seems to exist to make money without offering anything worthwhile. The biggest issue is definitely the script: it begins with LeBron James rejecting a contract from Warner Bros. A computer algorithm designed the deal, but somehow gained its own life and wants to get noticed, even if that means doing things poorly. By trapping the athlete and his son in a digital world, everything gets complicated. James has to play basketball against this live algorithm, and he turns to Bugs Bunny for help, who might have an idea. It's a simple story, very badly written and conceived, unable to hold up the movie. I don’t want to be harsh on LeBron James; he’s not an actor, so you can’t expect a stellar performance. I think he did as well as possible with what he was given, which wasn't much, but he isn't famous enough to carry the film like Air Jordan did before. Perhaps he is popular in America! Outside of the US, most people don't know who he is. Don Cheadle ends up being the strongest performer, even though his character is manipulative and exhausting. Cedric Joe does what he can, but his role is poorly developed; the kid’s personality is unpleasant almost until the very end – self-centered, selfish, vain, and resentful of his father. The film relies heavily on CGI for visual effects, and it doesn't work: the stylized look is tiresome. I especially dislike the computer-generated Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes characters; they’re terrible and unattractive. Some things shouldn't be modernized because they lose what makes them special! Also, the cinematography is repetitive, and the film is too long, with nothing to justify its length. However, I did appreciate all the references to older Warner films – everything from “King Kong” to “Casablanca,” connected by nods to “Harry Potter”, “Matrix”, and “Mad Max”. That was the most enjoyable part, but I still can’t recommend this movie.
