Having grown apart from each other as their lives shifted between careers and families, recently separated “Coco” (Michele Buteau) proposes to her friend “Sophie” (Anna Faris) that they treat “Jane” (Leslie Mann), who is celebrating a birthday, to a spa weekend—something with an air of quiet sophistication. They all agree on one thing: their fourth companion, "Mel" (Isla Fisher), shouldn't be included because she’s simply too unpredictable. Upon arriving at the lovely “Shanti” resort (Erika Heynatz) they anticipate a few days filled with mud treatments, steam rooms, and perhaps even an encounter with the attractive yoga instructor, “Kai” (Adam Demos). However, their private plan quickly fell apart when their other friend unexpectedly appeared, and soon their peace—and everyone else's—was disrupted. What follows is largely what you’d expect: slapstick humor, unruly goats, and a few moments of romance as disorder takes over and the strength of their friendships is put to the test. Do they manage to emerge from this experience without lasting damage? It isn’t very good, and I found myself hoping Anna Faris would transform into Goldie Hawn and that Heynatz would become Jane Seymour. Both Fisher and Buteau's characters are difficult to like from the beginning, and the constant stream of crude language feels like a cheap replacement for actual comedy. It's also odd that this film was written and directed by men, although it seems there must have been significant female input. The movie does improve somewhat after about thirty minutes; it pokes fun at the self-importance of those who favor incense and kale smoothies, and it’s noticeably better in the final fifteen minutes or so—though that's coming from a low point. It serves as a reminder of what we tolerate on a daily basis and why it can be beneficial to occasionally let loose, but the best parts are shown in the previews. If I had been "Kai," I would have left immediately. This feels like something you’d watch late one Christmas night after drinking too much spiced wine.
