Reno on Southside with You

7/10 · Dec 24, 2016

A modest movie that achieved limited recognition was made in just two weeks. The film, helmed by an inexperienced director, recounts the genuine experience of Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson’s first encounter in 1989 while employed at a major law firm in Chicago. It portrays how Michelle dismissed it as a date, maintaining that colleagues shouldn't pursue personal relationships. As Obama attempts to gain her affection, the movie depicts their day together, showcasing their conversations, activities, and ultimate outcome. It wasn’t the kind of biographical film I anticipated; I was eager to see it, but not for such a straightforward narrative. It feels like another installment in the style of 'Before Sunrise', and I wouldn't be shocked if they created additional chapters following a similar format. This story focuses on a single day when they were young and dedicated to their careers, developing some level of attraction despite recognizing boundaries. The writer-director states that all events portrayed are factual, although not necessarily occurring within the confines of one date. The performances were commendable, particularly Parker Sawyers' portrayal of Barack Obama. While I don’t consider it a remarkable film, it was competently produced. Supporters of Obama may find enjoyment in it; otherwise, if you appreciate realistic relationship stories, it might be worth checking out. The movie explores his early years, so there is no mention of his current political endeavors or presidency, aside from discussing their future aspirations. Instead, the focus remains on their interactions and personal lives—how they matured, what they cherished, and things of that nature. I suggest approaching it with tempered expectations. _6.5/10_
