This sprawling adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage show, initially overlooked by reviewers, has gained a following among musical enthusiasts—though it didn’t win me over. The songs are undeniably excellent, mostly quite good, but numerous problems detract from enjoyment. The color filters employed by director Joshua Logan and cinematographer Leon Shamroy are excessive; they attempt to create a sense of fantasy where a still backdrop simply can't sustain the effect. The film feels bloated, running at least 45 minutes too long, which means the war scenes, arriving so late in the story, feel disconnected from what’s happened during the preceding two hours. Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi, playing the romantic leads, are strikingly different both in personality and acting ability. She shines during the musical numbers, but her character becomes tiresome as the film progresses. He, however, delivers a very wooden performance, much like Logan’s static camera work. Even some of the dance routines seem like they were rejected early on in development. The music keeps things moving forward, because it certainly deserves attention, but ultimately this is one musical I don't think I'd ever want to see again. 5/10
