Having experienced both the original Chinese film and this adaptation, I can attest to its emotional impact, especially with that surprising final turn. While this version does a commendable job of portraying the bonds between characters, I felt the individual personalities were more fully realized in the earlier Chinese production. It's worth noting that the Korean film concludes differently than its predecessor; both endings are intensely affecting, but I personally found the Korean one to be more profound regarding the essence of friendship. I recommend viewing them both, and suggest watching the Chinese version initially, followed by this Korean take.
