The film runs on for too long, and the characters don’t feel fully developed, yet the narrative itself remains fairly captivating to observe unfold. Pierre Deladonchamps portrays "Jacques," a (somewhat) older writer from Paris who encounters a younger Breton man, "Arthur" (Vincent Lacoste), in a movie theater. At first, neither seems to want anything beyond a casual encounter, but they soon find themselves drawn together, exploring and appreciating each other. It’s revealed that “Jacques” spends alternate days with his young son, "Loulou," and is struggling with health issues—elements which direct the film's attention toward their needs and wants, both physical and emotional. The early 1990s setting makes it obvious what’s happening medically; the author’s gradual deterioration is apparent, though director Christoph Honoré avoids letting it dominate what is ultimately a fairly absorbing, albeit superficial, character study. Denis Podalydès and the young actor Tristan Farge offer compelling distractions from the central theme as the relationship and its consequences become more pronounced. The script prevents things from becoming overly sentimental; instead, it’s provocative and sensual, often humorous and occasionally blunt—which adds a layer of complexity to the story. I would have appreciated some longer scenes focused solely on the two main characters. I still had reservations about how quickly their romance progressed or whether it felt realistic, but this is far more than just another gay romantic drama, and I’d recommend giving it a chance.
