For half a century, "GUN" have maintained "Shadow" in a kind of thick, suspended animation far below ground within a highly secure location. Suddenly, he comes to, breaks free from his confinement, and that necessitates the director (Krysten Ritter) interrupting a family cookout to assemble “Team Sonic.” Our signature blue hedgehog, along with his closest friends "Tails" and "Knuckles," had established tranquil lives alongside "Tom" (James Marsden) and "Maddie" (Tika Sumpter), but they understand that they must answer the call. So, they head off. Then imagine their surprise when they find out that this new, exceptionally fast and powerful adversary is another hedgehog—though not quite as blue! Who exactly is he? What’s happening? And why does he seem to dislike humanity so much? Eventually, those questions are answered when it's revealed that the person pulling his strings is the biggest villain of all. The ultimate "Robotnik"—only with a somewhat larger midsection. Facing odds that appear insurmountable, it becomes essential for our brave group to attempt to forge their own alliance, but how long will that last? Don’t anticipate much suspense here; what begins as an enjoyable sequence of bang and pow action demonstrating the rivals' abilities can’t avoid devolving into a sentimental trap as predictable story elements take over and transform the characters into something gooey. I appreciate a strong antagonist, but it’s clear that no matter how wicked or malevolent he—in this case, the overly theatrical Jim Carrey—might be, no writer or director will ever allow him to triumph, and that's pretty obvious from the outset of this sequel that will also function as a prequel. Some of the dialogue is genuinely amusing, with numerous contemporary and wry references that elicit chuckles, and there are nods to virtually everyone from "007" and "Fantastic Four" to the "Avengers"—but ultimately it’s all just a bit too polished and foreseeable. It does look impressive on a large screen and occupies a couple of hours pleasantly for a Christmas release, but it's simply too derivative for my taste.
