It took three tries, but finally, a Sonic film I genuinely liked after being underwhelmed by the previous two. I found the first Sonic movie entertaining when I watched it with my kids, and this one was also enjoyable for us—a couple of pleasant hours spent together. These films are straightforward comedies blended with adventure elements. They’re undeniably silly movies, especially considering Jim Carrey is in a starring role; that's what anyone familiar with his work would anticipate. I typically find Jim Carrey’s performances irritating because of his tendency toward overacting and outlandish antics, but here he feels perfectly suited to the part. The film establishes its style immediately, beginning on the mushroom planet—which Dr. Robotnik refers to as a “piece of shitake planet”—and showcasing his coffee-making equipment. What unfolds is essentially an extended series of mostly slapstick jokes that still manage to maintain the narrative’s central plotline. It's not a poorly written story, and it contributes a welcome sense of adventure. Surprisingly, the movie even incorporates elements of realism—though perhaps unintentionally—as the federal agents behave in a manner consistent with their recent real-world reputations. The climactic showdown involving Dr. Robotnik’s massive robot was quite funny. I won't give away any details, but pay attention to that mustache. I appreciated that they didn't follow up that snot laser with a fart laser, though. Ultimately, it's a genuinely fun family adventure film.
