Perhaps it would have served better to explore how "Sully" and "Mike," along with the others, initially came together instead of creating a direct continuation of "Monsters, Inc." (2001). The story then shifts to their time in college, where “Sully” effortlessly excels at frightening people, while “Mike” seemed incapable of startling even a dessert. At first, "Randall" makes a stronger impression on the young green monster; they both find each other quite unpleasant to look at. A series of unfortunate events eventually pushes them to cooperate, after which they significantly upset "Dean Hardscrabble," resulting in their expulsion from scare class. Their only chance for survival within the “Scare Games” lies in forming a fraternity and winning that competition—the sole means of appeasing their angry professor and regaining classroom status. Numerous entertaining moments unfold as they learn to depend on one another. The scheming "Randall" hints at his later deceptive nature, and the episodic structure allows for enjoyable character interactions while laying the groundwork for their enduring connection (or lack thereof). The script delivers some laughs as it builds toward an ending that isn't entirely unexpected, though it is somewhat more unusual than anticipated. It doesn’t quite reach the heights of the original film, but as a reimagining of these likeable characters, this is a swiftly moving adventure that proves to be perfectly acceptable.
